Coral reefs are the basis of a healthy ocean. They are a crucial cornerstone of vibrant marine ecosystems and biodiversity. In fact, over 25% of marine species depend on coral reefs for survival. Coral is vital to neighboring communities as well: it protects coastlines, drives recreation and tourism, and provides sustenance.

The dire truth, however, is that today’s coral reefs—and in turn, the ecosystems and communities depending on them—face an unprecedented threat to their survival.

The increase in global ocean temperature due to climate change is killing off corals at an alarming rate. In 2016 alone, 29% of the Great Barrier Reef was lost. Scientists predict that by 2050, nearly 90% of the world’s coral reefs will disappear unless decisive action is taken.

The Tiffany & Co. Foundation has supported global coral conservation efforts since its establishment in 2000. Since that time, the Foundation has awarded over $18 million in grants to organizations engaged in marine conservation research, educational outreach and the establishment of marine protected areas.

For example, The Tiffany & Co. Foundation is supporting global outreach for the film Chasing Coral. This award-winning film, now available on Netflix, uses cutting-edge time-lapse technology to showcase the undeniable impacts of bleaching events on coral reefs. By using the power of film to transport communities underwater and witness the crisis firsthand, the outreach strategy aims to catalyze the changes needed to save our reefs.

Additionally, the Tiffany & Co. Foundation recently joined with Bloomberg Philanthropies and Paul G. Allen Philanthropies to support 50 Reefs, a pioneering initiative to identify, promote and protect the reefs least vulnerable to climate change and which have the greatest capacity to repopulate other reefs over time. The initiative works globally to help ensure the long-term viability of these vital ecosystems.

The Tiffany & Co. Foundation is proud to support these organizations working on the front lines of global coral conservation in order to protect these important ecosystems for generations to come.
